5 Questions about Digg dynamics

The big news on Digg several weeks ago revolved around the fact that algorithm changed. Whether this was due to people finding out the original algorithm or simply for Digg to ensure that actual user-driven and approved content was hitting the main page is completely up to whoever is speculating.

Over the past weekend, I was watching stories in Upcoming events (pretty lame I know but I was recovering from a nasty cold) as well as checking which stories made it to the Digg Recently Popular (main) page. Of course, the ones with the highest hit count made the page and those with low hit counts ( mine included) traveled into Digg oblivion and later to the back end of some 31,000,000+ hit Google search. (Try Lindsey Lohan)

While making this observation, I also noticed that there were a ton of stories hitting the Digg main page that had never once touched the Upcoming page. Stories from the major news sites, big-hit blogs and the like were flying up the charts.

These stories were getting 1000+ hit counts and they had never once touched the Upcoming page!

5 Questions:

How is this possible?

Why are sites that already getting millions of hit in a day from the sole fact that they are not only running a professionally maintained site but they also have televised news?

Why are sites like MSNBC, CNN, Fox News (this should never make the main page unless it's completely ludicrous!) implementing Digg into their websites?

Have minor bloggers such as myself made that much of impact that we are now trying to be blocked out by the giants?

Is what we say as influential and quality as what they say?
____________________________________________________________________

I'm viewing this as inspirational and something to keep me blogging. News sites feel like they losing a battle that never really was meant to happen. The stories that are climbing through Upcoming page and bringing in hits the "real" way are earning my respect. I have been made friends with a lot of these Diggers and I Digg them!

To my Digg friends: I will Digg you to the top if your material is good! You are all the reason why Digg was started! You have earned my respect and I will Digg you to the end!

To the network news sites: Is it really necessary to infiltrate Digg to boost your "all knowing egos?" I enjoy what you have to write and I read it on your sites. I don't need to read it on Digg as well!

To the major blogs: I'm not criticizing you in the least. You have worked you @sses off and you have reached a level that every blogger wishes to reach. Keep up the great work and, again, I'll Digg you to the end!

To all other Digg submitters: Digg original material. Don't copy crap and call it your own. I don't need to hear from Joe Blow in Peidmont, ND that Apple released SDK when it's been on every major news site, tech site and reputable blogger for the past 4 hours.

Be Creative!

Have a great day!

Did you read that article about...Reddit!

This week, I've had a lot of focus on the blogging world and the exposure that so many of us want! I think it's a good idea to keep up with that theme for at least another entry.

Yesterday, I talked about the great, FREE service called BlogRush. Easy exposure through every blogger that has installed that particular widget on their website. You get to see what other sites might be interesting while you visit your favorites.

Today, I'm going into a little web service called Reddit. This particular site is basically a Digg.com but it seems to be a growing website! I've installed the widget on the right hand side (The little white box with a number and an alien-esque creature) and because of that, my hits has honestly doubled in the past 3 days!

It's UNBELIEVABLE! You post a blog entry, submit it to Reddit and watch the hits roll in.

Now granted, this isn't necessarily a good thing if the users don't really even read your blog but this does increase your chances of finding people who enjoy your content and what you have to offer in the huge world of the Web.

I suggest you try it and watch your readers level fly high! I could be wrong, but I doubt it! PROVE ME WRONG!

Link up, subscribe, Digg me, Reddit me, post a comment and enjoy!

Have a great day!

One of the Greatest Sites...EVER!

When I was checking out some of my favorite sites, I just happened to come across a great site!

BitTorrent has been making news over the past few weeks on some of the major tech sites. Because no one user distributes or owns a copy of a movie, tv show or cartoon, BitTorrent is basically the loop hole in the copyright laws that have been stirring up the world since the collapse of the original Napster.

The problem with BitTorrent is that it requires you to find a download manager you like and then you have to search out for the pieces (torrents) that you want.

There are 2 issues here:

1. It's a lot of work and technological understanding for nothing that is guaranteed to work.
2. Unless you have a huge hard drive (or two), you will fill it with media to a point of crashing.

Now what if there was a site that eliminates all of this and allows you to watch movies directly on your browser without using hard drive space? What if you didn't have to search out for the pieces but instead they were listed right there for you to click through each piece of the media?

Well now there is. The site is called VideoHybrid and it offers all of the above!

VideoHybrid has an ever growing list of new and older blockbuster movies (i.e. Transformers, The Bourne Ultimatum, The Simpsons Movie, The Godfather, etc.) as well TV shows, anime and cartoons.

All of these pieces of media are divided into parts and broken down to about 30 minute sections and the quality is not high definition, but these are still highly desired movies for free with no risk at the moment!

Give the site a try and you can thank me later!

Let me know your thoughts, leave some comments, link up, subscribe and enjoy! I could be wrong in thinking that this is one of the greatest sites on the web.

Prove me wrong and have a great day!

A Quick Blog Shout Out!

Over the past few days I've come to realize that I need to take advantage of the beautiful weather and the wonderful company of my girlfriend, my family and my friends while I am still at home and have some time available. This is why my blog has not had an entry for a while.

I also realized I was getting a little too wrapped up in the blog and, in turn, I wasn't letting myself just find new stuff and write about it. (The surge in my readership mixed with some helpful tools online can be attributed to this.)

I decided to do a revamp of the site appearance. If you hadn't noticed, the site was looking almost old-fashioned and not very modern. With that, I decided to research a lot more into some different formats to make my blog reflect me a little better.

Luckily, I just happened to stumble across THE BEST Blogger/Blogspot tweak blog I've ever read and it will blow your mind if you are a Blogger user.

My new appearance can only be accreditted to the author(s) over at Tricks for New Bloggers. This blog is wonderful and really brings my enthusiam back to Blogger after trying out WordPress.

This blog will help your blog look better, run better and overall just ROCK!

Look it up and prove me wrong in my opinion that this is THE BEST place for Blogger help!

Thanks and don't forget to link up, subscribe, read and just enjoy!

Prove me wrong!

Confusion of Feedburner

As I've been getting back into my blog and working to develop strong posts that spark some interest, I've noticed something that had me baffled but not has me delighted about a service I used called FeedBurner.

FeedBurner is an RSS service provided that is really the whole package of everything that a blogger could ask for. I can see how many subscribers I have. How many readers each day. What the most popular blogs. What RSS services everyone uses and what the top clicks in and out of the blog are.

This service is just AWESOME!

My concern at the start extended from the fact that I found that quite a few of the subscribers are actually search bots for most of the major RSS blog sites such Feedster, Google, Yahoo, Bloggster, Blo.gs, Technorati and FeedBurner itself. I thought this was something of concern because I didn't have actual people reading my blog, but rather a bunch of bots that scan the Web for updates in blogs and then posts them in their central webpage.

Then I realized that this was great because now my blog is getting posted on ten other sites with no work at all. All I have to do is work on strong titles for my posts, have a solid content within the body and make sure my keywords stand out well.

Because I've done that, I've watched my hits climb to 20 hits a day and my subscribers grow even further! It's great! I love it!

Thank you FeedBurner! You are a great service and I can't thank you enough for the amazing product you have published!

Let's keep the momentum going: if you like my blog, subscribe, link up, leave comments and just read.

Thanks and have a great day!

A Connection: Part II Browsers

After reading a recent article at TechCrunch by Michael Arrington, I was bit perplexed by what he was saying. Google is thinking about purchasing and rereleasing a browser that they could call their own.

REALLY?

Now why would Google want to do that? And just how many browsers do they think users need or even want?

These were just a few of the questions I asked myself when I read the article so I decided to research a little and find out some of the facts that revolve around web browsers.

In my mind, there are several browsers that deserve note in every article about web browsers.

-Internet Explorer, Microsoft's browser that comes preloaded on every Windows machine and does the trick but is susceptible to security flaws for the sole reason of being a Microsoft product.

-Mozilla Firefox 2.0: an open-source project that is becoming the largest contendor for Internet Explorer. With a huge selection of add-ons and a strong support base, this is a great browser.

-Safari: Apple's attempt at a strong web browser that has recently switched to be used over Mac and Windows operating systems.

-Opera: An open source project that is developing a name for being the underdog against the three browsers previously listed. It's nice and simple and does the trick.

In recent search on Download.com, I found 286 entries for browsers. Granted, browsers can be anything from web browsers to media browsers to P2P (person-to-person) share browsers and the list goes on and on. After just checking the first 20 entries, I was astounded to find that only two of listed browsers are what could be considered to be mainstream browsers, Mozilla Firefox and Opera.

Now why would Google think we need to see a browser from them? I'll tell you why: because Firefox has adapted an all inclusive browser that I am using currently called Flock. and it's the next big thing for web browsing!

Flock is a social networking browser that incorporates many of the major blogging, picture and video sites into the browser itself and allows you to update anything from Flickr to Blogger and Wordpress to PhotoBucket from any page on the Web.

I've blogged Flock before. You can find the entry here.

I think Google is trying to find a way to cash in on this market as well by implementing a browser that will allow you to use all of their services like Blogger, orkut, YouTube, Google Maps, Google Reader, Google Talk and so on.

This makes complete sense and it would be another way for Google to advertise for a lot of companies in a short amount of time! Is this good? I think so. Will we see it soon? Maybe. Will I switch over to G-Browser? If the product is quality, I'll try anything! Does Flock still rock? OH YEAH!

So let me know what you think! Don't forget to leave some comments, link up, subscribe if you like what I have to say and just let me know!

Have a great day!

Social Networking for Everyone!

Social networking seems to be the topic of discussion for almost all of the Web over the past few weeks. Facebook did this, MySpace did that, AIM added this, Yahoo pleased more customers, Google tried to break into all of their balloons of success...blah blah blah!

For those who don't know what social networking on the Web entails, I suggest you read this article by Mark Hendrickson at TechCrunch and possibly read into some of the links he has posted there as well.

For the basic understanding, social networking is basically meeting up with people you know online as well as meeting with people who have similar interests in life. They way to meet these people is the area of interest for users. There are platforms all over the Web that allow users to find other users through common links. Think of the rule "Six degrees of seperation" but on steroids.

The problem for most users is trying to find the right one that lets them do what they want, when they want and how they want. Each site has restrictions and safe guards for the both the company and the users.

Check out my recent post about the variety of networks that you can connect to.

My reason for this post is basically because it seems as though people are forgetting about the original way to link up to people on the Web: through word of mouth and actually links from blogs and sites!

I love my readers. They inspire me to keep writing and looking for new and wonderful things in the world of tech. They keep me on my toes and really make me smile.

I guess this is a call out to everyone that reads my blog: Let me know that you read my blog. Add me to your e-mail or RSS feeds, link up to a post that you like, leave me comments (good or bad, I enjoy feedback)!

Fellow bloggers, let me know if there is something you want me to read on your blog or check out in relation to something I've writtin. I would love to meet some new bloggers and get some fresh ideas!

Let's social network the old way a little bit. I'm trying to my best by having a link to some blogger every day! If you blog, why not give it a try for every blogger out there?

My blog has no restriction on who can leave comments or add me to e-mail or RSS and I don't require membership. Let me know what you think and if you like what I have to say, add me! Spread the word and I will be glad to do the same!

Thanks and have a great day!

Wiki What!?!

In the past several days, I've had a few people ask me, "What's a wiki?" or "What is the difference between a wiki and a blog?" and my common response has been Google it or check on Wikipedia. This is severe slacking on my part as a "techy" because there is a reason that people are asking me this: they know I know and they want a human answer for a very human question.

So for anyone out there who happens to be reading blogs and running across more and more wikis in their everyday searches and online escapades, here is a quick definition with my twist.

A blog: You are reading my blog write now. This is a place that an individual, such as myself, can review products, report news, express thoughts, show emotion, literate displeasure, publish ideas and overall add their own personal opinion and twist to the ever growing world of the Internet and the World Wide Web. A blog has a standard site that is used by a large number of bloggers and is not necessarily 100% reputable or factual. Think of blogs as the editorial page within the Internet's newspaper. Fortunately, bloggers are gaining more and more of reputation as reputable and the information they provide is becoming a vital source of success or failure within many of the major industries such as business, film, and technology.

A wiki: Similar to a blog in ever regard except it is usually received as an open document that can be edited by any user with an account through the wiki provider with no one person being received as the sole author. Wikis are usually regarded as complete (or as close to complete as possible) entries into the data and facts of the Web. Wikis tend to have an encyclopedia feel that in all regards works very well. Wikipedia is a prime example of this. This particular wiki is the source of a lot of written material provided by high school and college students, journalists and published writers alike!

Both blogs and wikis work incredibly well in every regard that they were intended to be used for. Keep in mind that wikis are meant to be factual and were created in order to assist users in receiving the correct information. They are not blogs are not meant to be manipulated to express the opinions of bitter users or the like. Keep opinions in the blogs and express the truth in wikis!

There you have it, a blogger's opinion on the difference between blogs and wikis. Let me know your thoughts and correct me if I'm wrong.

Have a great day!

Spock It!

With a little help from Wired, TechCrunch and Lifehacker, I've been trying out a new online social network of sorts called Spock.

Spock is an online application that is meant to create a solid image and collection of all of your online identities on most of the websites that require registration. This concept is great and makes it easy for an individual or company to get a grasp of what you are interested in, what kind of voice or political stance or education or any of wide variety of interests that you might display throughout the web!

There are some downsides to this particular concept considering the simple fact that ambiguity among sites is no longer possible if people begin to register. This would prevent events such as the recent fake "Job's Blog" that caused a small uproar of laughter throughout the online community of bloggers.

Granted, this system can be manipulated and what not but this idea is great and makes for quite an interesting idea that you can have a very centrally located page that has extensions and links to all of your online identities!

I am finding this utility to be quite interesting and fun to play with, but there are risks on my mind that do concern me. If a black hatter (a bad hacker) were to access one of my accounts, I am unsure as to whether or not they would have access to my Spock account and in turn have access to all of my accounts. This is something to be addressed in the near future I hope and I plan to do more research in regards to this site.

If anyone has any experience with this application or the new WikiYou site, please let me know of any perks or concerns you might have! I'd greatly appreciate it!

Have a great day!

Entourage and a Blogger's Union???

After a quick trip to the closest Best Buy, I found out that Best Buy is now selling Apple computers! I have very little experience with Apple and Mac but the more I play with these computers, the more I really enjoy them!

With this in mind, I found a program that seems to answer all of the problems that Windows users have been griping about for years! Microsoft Entourage is the Mac version of Outlook that goes above and beyond everything that Outlook has ever been. This particular program has been around since 2004, I believe, and it seems to have made all of my wildest dreams come true with an easy to use interface and complete integration of e-mail, notes, calendar, task center, project and an address book!

This program would be more than good enough reason for me to purchase a Mac (if I happened to have the cash).  This program seems to incorporate all of Google's free, online services of Gmail and documents service. For some reason, I've found something of interest in this program. Let me know if anyone has some experience with this program.

The other note in this entry comes from several of my RSS feeds in Flock. It seems as though many of the journalists including Ashley M. Heher at USA Today, have been reporting on the fact that many professional bloggers are trying to rally to form a union.

I found this to be incredibly interesting because the idea of professional blogging has been developing over the past year or so and now those who have chosen to write online for a living would like to have a standard, a health care program and many more benefits. Interesting to say the least considering the world of journalism may or may not be moving away from incorporated and fully funded sources such as the major news sites and more so towards a wide open opinion based writing base of bloggers.

As a blogger, I think this is great considering the fact that I'm watching my opinion develop a stronger hold on individuals and corporations alike. Globalization transition is making news without actually having the news say it!

Please give the article a read and let me know your thoughts.

Have a great day!

Another Web 2.0 Application and a little insight in Blogging

The Web 2.0 movement has been sweeping the internet for awhile now. Some critics are even saying that we have skipped from Web 2.0 to 3.0 but still not quite sure how or when that happened so that is just a mystery. For anyone who doesn't know what Web 2.0 is, it is basically the movement towards more user defined applications for productivity and connectivity. Programs like Meebo, StumbleUpon and the entire Firefox browser are becoming known as Web 2.0 applications.

Basically, it's anything that you find on the web that may help you to do your job a little bit better or more easily. Unfortunately, you have to try to find these applications on your own and that then figure out if they work and if they are worth it. Fortunately, you have this blog where I happen to expose and run a lot of the programs for easy access for you!

Today's application that I think is pretty much amazing is a tool called Printer Anywhere and it does just that: prints to a printer anywhere. You download the program, let the computer find some printers or insert a printer of your choosing and there is no network knowledge necessary!

This tool is invaluable especially if you are often mobilized or if your printer happens to break down (which happens more frequently than you might think!) Give it a try and let me know your thoughts!

A quick thought here but if you are subscriber to this blog, you know that I have been trying to get my blog out there for about 3 months. I've been getting some great help from the forums and I'm seeing some great improvements. I'm planning on implementing a way for me to get some exposure by linking my blog posts to other bloggers and hopefully have them do that in return! If you are blogger and you want to help in this process, link up to this blog and I'll see it on Technorati and start linking up to your blog. Get the RSS or e-mail subscription in the process! A preemptive Thank You to anyone and everyone that helps with this exposure!

Second entry for the fellow bloggers: TwoPointTouch,, Feisty Red, Untwisted Vortex, Daytime Deals, Spyware, Adware, and Security News, Andy Beard, A Frog to Kiss, Article Discovery

Enjoy Printer Anywhere, help with the blog, subscribe to it and please leave your comments!

Have a great day!
