So the Web 2.0 movement has made a huge difference in the lives of many people and most don't even realize it!
Everyday, I check my Facebook religiously and I watch my friends and family check out the MySpace pages. Both of these programs are considered to be Web 2.0 social networking programs. Completely online based and something that is user derived allows for these programs to flourish. But for those users who don't know what all these things are, how about a brief explanation and some links?
MySpace is one of the original social networking sites that was started in order to users to express their personalities to other users. Basically, it is an easy way to make friends with hundreds, even thousands, from across the Internet and around the world. Simple and completely customizable if you have the patience to learn some basic programming and able enough to add music and highly designed backgrounds. Unfortunately, it's becoming a cluttered mess that appears sloppy to most users and has begun to receive a lot of criticism due to recent stalking and murder cases.
Facebook, a clean, user-based network that was originally designed for college students at major universities to connect with other college students on the same network but eventually expanded to include every college and university in the nation. Now, this is a completely open network that allows anyone with an e-mail address to use the network. With the addition of the new applications program added to the interface, you can have access to literally thousands of additions to your profile. Highly recommended from my point of view.
orkut, Google's acquisition and answer of a social network that is beginning to grow even further. I have little experience with this particular network but it does appear to be as in depth and complete as MySpace or Facebook. This is both good and bad with the positive revolving around a safer community and a negative of the inability to express everything you feel is necessary. A Google Account is required as with most of Google's services.
Bebo, a social network in the beta stages. It looks like a great and easy to use program that appears to be a MySpace remake. I have no user experience with this program but it's something of interest as it takes an invite to get into the program. Worth of shot if you are looking to enter a social network.
Zude, the drag and drop interface that has been gaining some exposure. It is simple to use but the interface is a little overwhelming. There are some wonderfully professional looking profiles but there are some that look as if a 2 year old took hold of a mouse and click his way through some extensions. Interesting to say the least and worth a shot if you want something to look really good behind your own imagination!
iuGen, a small community that is trying to connect the many users of the internet through a "genome-esque" program. I have mentioned this site before and I can only hope that this will catch on. Give this one a try and see how you are connected!
